 |
The "South Shore
Division" is a part of the Soo Line Historical & Technical
Society. We are listed in the Soo Line Historical
web site under the DSS&A. The division was formed in
about 1990 by Bob Oom. Presently there are approx. 200
members and dues are $25.00 to join the Soo Line group first
with an additional $8.00 to join the Division. Thru the
years the DSS&A Division has sponsored 5 Upper Michigan.,
Wisconsin & Minnesota railfan trips using WC, Eire Mining &
Soo Line engines (GP-30 # 700, FP-7 # 2500, 2-8-2 # 1003
& Eire Mining # 4211). They were also the first group to
run the Algoma Central dome car all the way to end of track
in Hearst.
The Div. has
pursued, obtained and is now working on the restoration of
the following diesel engines: Ex-Copper Range Baldwin S-12
# 200 and Ex-DSS&A Alco RS-1 # 101, both of which are at
the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota.
The group meets
once a year in the fall for a 3 day convention in a town in
which the DSS&A operated. Towns have included Superior, WI,
Duluth, MN, Marquette, MI, Houghton, MI, Hancock, MI,
Gladstone, MI, Sault Ste. Marie, MI and Ontario. Tentively,
our next meeting will be as co-hosts with the Michigan
History Conference for their 2004 gathering in St. Ignace,
MI on Oct. 2, 2004.
