Mountain Railroad in 1855. [EHMT]

In operation in Ishpeming
and the first shipments went out in 1858. In 1870, it was the
first mine to use diamond drulls for exploring on the Marquette
Range. The mine became very large. There was a large pit
in the hard ore mine, built in the South Barnum Mine area. The
mine employed approximately 500 men in 1881. In the 1870's and
1880's the company opened another mine called the
Lake Superior
Hematite mine. [EHMT]
