As a result of the failed Penn Central merger, Conrail was formed from a number of eastern railroads, and their power often made it to Michigan.  In the photo above, a former Central Railroad of New Jersey SD-40-2 No. 6051, leads eastbound hot shot train NY-4 on the Air Line branch of Conrail at C.P. 2, which was near Spring Arbor.  The Air Line branch was operated by centralized traffic control (CTC) from Jackson to Elkhart, Indiana.  December, 1976.  Doug Leffler photo.
