A New York
Central locomotive 7517, is steam cleaned and rinsed at the
locomotive service facilities at Jackson, Michigan. The
maintenance workers are dressed in rubber aprons and one has a
face shield to protect them from the elements. This photo
was taken in 1949. Jackson was one of two major locomotive
shops on the NYC's former Michigan Central. At one time,
the railroad employed over 5,000 Jackson area residents.
Many of the buildings in the old Jackson terminal are still in
place and now serve as warehouses. The other major service
facility was at St. Thomas, Ontario.
