A MC Passenger Train Scoops Water at Dexter Track Pans

A speeding westbound Michigan Central passenger train scoops up water on the fly at the Dexter track pans on the main line.  Dexter was the original location of track pans on the MC main line.  Later, they were moved to Four Mile Lake, just east of Chelsea.  This 1907 photograph shows what appears to be the pump and boiler house.  In addition to supplying water to the pans, the boiler house provided steam to keep the pans unfrozen during the winter.  To the left of the boiler house is an old MC boxcar, which is used for storage.  Eventually, there were four sets of track pans on the MC main line (Four Mile Lake (Chelsea), Marshall, Lawton and Avery (between Galien and Three Oaks.  Mark Worrall Collection]
