The Pere
Marquette depot at Edmore was a busy place at the turn of the
century. In this photo, two PM passenger trains are
meeting and exchanging passengers at the station. Edmore
was the crossing of PM branches which ran between Greenville or
Ionia, northwest to Big Rapids and then Muskegon. The
east-west branch lines ran from Alma and Howard City. Over
the years, many of these branch lines were cut back and Edmore
became a way station on a through route between Elmdale and
Saginaw. The distinctive depot at Edmore is unique to
Michigan. The second floor might have housed the station
agent in the early years. The pole at the top of the
station was probably used to signal the crossing, and is an
example where the term "high-ball" became synonymous with
proceed. [Alan Loftis Collection]
