A Chicago &
Northwestern powered Coke train proceeds westbound on the Grand
Trunk Western main line underneath the old Lansing coaling
tower, just west of Trowbridge. The coaling tower
was used in earlier times to fuel the never-ending appetite of
steam locomotives pulling freight and passenger trains.
The coal was delivered on a side track (to the left of the
photo), where it was dumped into conveyers and hauled up to the
holding bin above. These coal towers usually dispensed
sand as well, and water for tenders was not far away. July
25, 1983 This coal tower continues to exist as of 2005.
