NYC Train DC-1 heads west from Jackson on the Air Line

Alco FA units power New York Central train DC-1 westbound on the Air Line Branch at West Street, in Jackson, Michigan.  April, 1963.  For many years, the Air Line near Jackson was double tracked, with the second track being the former Fort Wayne, Jackson & Saginaw line which ran parallel to the Air Line as far as Haires Junction.  The remnants of this second line appear to be at the left.  The plan for the Air Line itself was to be another opportunity for the Grand Trunk to reach Chicago, but was thwarted by Vanderbilt interests when they bought the section west of Jackson.   [Rahn Stokes photo, Doug Leffler Collection]
