In the 2/1982 edition of the Inside Track, the Captain of the Chief Wawatam reported that even if the boat only makes a single trip a week, 18 of the crew of 30 have to be kept on full time status to keep the hand-fired boilers under steam. If the steam isn' kep up, the seacocks would freeze and break, and the engine room and below decks space would flood. "She'd sink right at the dock,", said Captain Roderick Graham.
