  • The Branch Line from near West Yard (near Marquette) to near Shopko (a store) was the former DSS&A "Dead River Branch".  It left the mainline and crossed Washington Street through the intersection just east of the Shopko parking lot.  I know there were a few sawmills on the branch line.  Comments from Andy Roth.
  • The Dead River Railroad Co. was formed 11/11/1889 and its 3.15 miles were opened for use on 8/11/1890... As of 1891 the DSS&A Railway was operating over this railroad under contract with R.K.Hawley and T.H.McGraw.  This agreement was "to haul certain logs belonging to said Hawley & McGraw for a stated price per M ft.".   In the DSS&A annual report of 1893 the Dead River Railroad was listed as being either a leased or proprietary road.  Thus the beginnings of the Dead River branch line.  Comments from John Crawford.
