Interurbans

A Grand Rapids & Indiana passenger train stops at Wayland, Michigan south of Grand Rapids.  According to the writing on the photo, this is a "union" station which means that it was probably used by the interurban railroad.  Note the water tower on the left.  The station semaphore indicates that all trains must await train orders from the station's telegraph operator.  [Alan Loftis Collection]  Below, additional photographs of the same station.  [Alan Loftis collection]

Above, another early view of Wayland which appears to be an older station or freight house.  The device at the left is perhaps a mail bag delivery device.

Above and below, more photos of the old depot at Wayland.  [Alan Loftis Collection]

Below, a current view of the Wayland depot or freight house, taken in 2003.  This is either an older depot, or a freight house, as it is much smaller than the photos above.  [Alan Loftis]
