Above, a postcard view of the elegant Detroit & Mackinac Railway depot at Alpena.  This was one of the largest and most elegant railroad depots in northern Michigan.  It burned to the ground in the late 1990's.  [Alan Loftis collection]  Below, an early photograph of a D&M passenger train in front of the Alpena depot with a large crowd.  [Dale Berry collection]

This is the Detroit & Mackinac Ry. freight house in Alpena, located on the north side of the river right downtown.  The freight house was built early in the 19th century on the site of one of the original D&M/Alpena & Northern passenger stations.  The track going east on the left around the building is the former A&N main line, now a little used industrial branch to the former paper mill on the bay.  Photograph by Dale Berry.
