Two views of the LaFarge Corporation's cement plant in Alpena, which was formally known as the Huron Portland Cement Company.  The photo above is from an early view of the quarry where rail cars were used to move the aggregate to the plant.  The postcard view also shows a small round house in the quarry.  Today, trucks are used to haul aggregate, and the facility is still served by rail for certain shipments.  Below, the LaFarge switcher is moving cars through the loading building in a 2003 photo.  The rail line extending towards the photographer is the lead to the Lake States Railway yard at Alpena Junction.  [Dale Berry photo].  The NDYX covered hoppers in the bottom photo are inbound loads of fly ash which come from the coal-fired power plant in Nanticoke, Ontario.  LaFarge receives an average of twenty loaded cars weekly in 2003.  [Information from Scott Heiden]
