Michigan RailroadCommission Debate Re: Half Interlockers

GTW/DT&M Interlocker, Battle Creek

12/15/1916:  Application is made to the Michigan Railroad Commission (MRC) by the GTW to install a 1/2 interlocking plant.  Up to this time, the DT&M (MC) and GTW trains were required under state law to come to a full stop before proceeding after knowing that the way was clear.

1/16/1917:  The MRC denies installation of a 1/2 interlocking due to safety concerns.  Trains continue to stop before crossing.

12/16/1921:  The MRC approves the installation of a 1/2 interlocking.

4/20/1938:  The GTW moves its distant approach signals an additional 700' from their previous location so that train speeds can be increased.  [Note: in the early part of the 1900's, a Battle Creek city ordinance limited trains to 10 m.p.h. through the city.  This was probably changed at this point to a higher speed].

6/12/1941:  The GTW adds dwarf signals [Note:  probably for opposing movements on their main lines].

12/30/1963:  The Interstate Commerce Commission gives the railroads relief from certain ICC provisions.  They note:

  • McCamley interlocking is manually controlled, 24 hours per day
  • Average NYC movements over the crossing are 1 per day, 6 days per week
  • The NYC operates no passenger trains over the crossing
  • Electric locks and derails serve the same functions on the NYC as a signal
