Marshall was a major division point on the early Michigan Central Railroad as it built west from Detroit to Chicago.  Marshall was home to division offices as well as locomotive and car shops.  Most of these were moved to Jackson, which left Marshall as a routine station on the MC's main line.

The Michigan Central had at least four depots at Marshall, three of which are photographed below.  In addition to these depots, Marshall had an interurban depot, as well as at least one depot on the Detroit, Toledo & Milwaukee Railroad which was south of the Michigan Central line.

Above, this is probably the second Michigan Central depot at Marshall, captured in this early photograph taken sometime between 1853 and 1863.  Below, the third Marshall depot, built after 1863, and being prepared for moving across the line in this photograph.  [Dale Berry collection]

Below, Marshall's fourth depot on the Michigan Central, taken while a train passes at track speed in 1922.  [Dale Berry Collection]  Below, the depot in 1939, just before renovations.  In 1940, the old depot was mostly demolished, with a small portion and the external freight building retained.  The bottom photo is the completed project.  [Charles Milliken photographs, Doug Leffler collection]
