Boyne Falls Station on the Boyne City Railroad 1981 (above).  Below is a drawing taken from the Michigan Archives Interlocker file showing a proposed interlocking of the Grand Rapids & Indiana, Boyne City Gaylord & Alpena, and the Boyne Falls & Northeastern Railroad.  It is likely that this interlocking was built because the footing for the tower appear to still exist.  This E-W line may have been a logging route for the Boyne City Railroad before the road was built south to Elmira (the GR&I overhead bridge) and then east to Gaylord.   [Drawing by Dale Berry]

(Below)  A postcard view of a 1-car passenger train near the water tower at Boyne Falls, Michigan.  Date unknown.

  • Comment from Bruce Gathman (6/27/02):  Concerning the interlocking map about Boyne Falls.  It surly had to exist as there is a foundation for the structure still in existence.  Also the line crossing E-W was actually a branch used by the White Lumber Comapny out of Boyne City.  It came off the BCG&A about two miles to the west.  The BF&NE had a four stall engine house and other tracks and structures in addition to those shown on your map.

  • Editors Note:  Additional information suggests that the E-W line of the Boyne City Railroad existed (through the interlocker) before the BCG&A was built south through Elmira and east on to Gaylord.  The foundation for the tower that Bruce Gathman has found appears to support this information.  Dale Berry
