Riggsville Mail Carrier Run Down by M. C. Train

Otsego Herald and Times

August 24, 1917

Joseph Valjof, the Riggsville mail carrier, was run down at the Mullet Lake crossing Saturday afternoon by the south bound passenger train on the Michigan Central, sustaining a fracture of the right leg and also being cut about the head and otherwise badly bruised.

The train was two and a half late and Valjof who was in his wagon was just crossing the track ahead of the approaching train, attempted to back up his horse.  The engine struck the rig, smashing it into kindling wood and killing the horse.

Dr. W. G. Rice happened to be there on his way from Topinabee to Cheboygan and attended the injured man, who was placed on board the train and taken to the Grayling hospital.
