  • Comments from Michigan Shortlines Board (12/30/02):  "There's always been a bridge tender on duty 1st and 2nd trick when I've been there in the summer time. There are relatively few trains a day that cross the bridge to the best of my knowledge. The ships use the south 3 locks so a SB train can pull up to the second bridge and wait. NB's stop just short of the south bridge. It doesn't take a real long time to get a time slot to let a train through even if there are boats. If you put the Soo Locks Lockmaster frequency in your scanner you will be able to hear the lock master and bridge tender talk to each other and coordinate the boats and trains:) One of my trips this summer, the lock master couldn't raise the bridge tender on the radio. The Corps of Engineers had a tug working the area and the lockmaster sent them over to see if he was ok (he was - just outside for a few minutes).
