Comment by Kevin on 3/28/2006: The Detroit & Charlevoix was built by David E. Ward around 1899 to haul timber for his lumber company. The D. E. Ward Lumber Company had a large saw mill in Deward on the banks of the Manistee River. (Deward is now a ghost town, located just northwest of Frederic). Finished products from the lumber yard would travel via the D&C main line to East Jordan for transfer to ships to Chicago. Cars would also interchange via the Michigan Central at Frederic. |
