Petoskey was settled in
1852 and known as Bear River and then Porter's Village. It was
renamed Petoskey with the coming of the railroad on December 5,
1873. It was incorporated as a village in 1879 and as a city
in 1896.
Railroads came to Petoskey
in May, 1874 when the Grand Rapids & Indiana built into town from
the south. By early 1882, the railroad had been extended north
to Bay View, and the Little Traverse and Mackinaw Rail Road was
built from Bay View to Harbor Springs. Both lines later became
the Grand Rapids & Indiana and that route was extended to Mackinaw
City in 1882: The Chicago & North Michigan (later Chicago &
West Michigan, then the Pere Marquette) arrived in town from
Charlevoix and points south in 1892. |
