Hillsdale
was settled in 1834 and platted in 1835. It was incorporated as a
village in 1847 and as a city in 1869. It was called Hillsdale
Center in the early days. [MPN]
The first railroad to arrive at Hillsdale
was the "Southern line", owned by the State of Michigan in 1843.
The line continued northwest to Jonesville in 1849. In 1871, the
Detroit, Hillsdale and Southwestern built their line west from Ypsilanti
to Hillsdale which continued through town and slightly west to a
connection with the Fort Wayne, Jackson and Saginaw at Bankers.
The FWJ&S had bypassed Hillsdale in favor of Jonesville in 1869. |
