Above, downtown Parma in 1922.  Note the MCRR depot on the main line, and the interurban depot up the hill on the right.  The interurban tracks can be seen coming down the middle of the road, and then veering west on the side street to continue their route to Albion and west.  The crossing of the MCRR also appears to be protected by a automatic bell signal, which is on the crossing post.  [Doug Leffler collection].  Below, the Michigan Central depot and nearby mill in another view.  [Rusty Davis Collection]

Above, the former interurban depot at Parma.  The depot is now a library and city hall and has been moved about 1/2 block from its original location.  [Dale Berry]  Below, the interurban depot at Parma in 1908.  The Jackson to Battle Creek interurban tracks (two) pass on the road in front and the trolley cable is above.  In front of the depot is the town water tower which appears to have a windmill powered pump above.  There is a hand water pump at the base of the tower.  An electric street light hangs by wires in front of the windmill.  It appears to be part of the windmill structure but it is not.  The depot also has a train order/block signal mounted atop a white pole.  [Alan Loftis Collection]

Parma was founded in 1833.  The Michigan Central Railroad reached the town in spring, 1844 and the village was platted in April, 1848.  It was named Groveland at the time.  The name was changed in 1862 when it received its post office.  It was named after Parma, New York where some of its early residents had come from.  [MPN and others].
