A wider photo of Lapeer, including the interlocking tower on the left and the Grand Trunk Western depot on the right.  The photo is from June, 1975.  The GTW train is eastbound on the Flint Subdivision.  Lapeer was milepost 290 on the GTW and milepost 59.8 on the Penn Central Mackinaw Branch.  [Photo by Charlie Whipp].

The inside of the Lapeer Interlocking, taken in June, 1976 [Charlie Whipp].

The photo below shows the model board in the interlocking tower at Lapeer Jct.  Note that there is an eastbound across the diamond on the siding, and a westbound on approach to the siding that has a green proceed through the interlocking.  Nothing happening on the NYC.  [Charlie Whipp]

Two shots of the GTW Lapeer depot and tower in the background, c. 1970's.  The photo below shows the Amtrak Turboliner exchanging Lapeer passengers.  [Both photos: Jim Slater]

The model board at Lapeer Jct. is pictured below at the left.  The green light on the board shows that route has been established by the operator for a westbound train on the GTW through the interlocking.  The yellow light to the right shows that a train is on the circuit to the plant.  The yellow light in the center shows that a train is working on the old eastbound main.  The small black box was the bell for the GTW.  It rang when a train was approaching requesting a route through the interlocking.  The operator could either establish a route for the train, or, if there was a conflicting movement, manually turn the bell off.  The Michigan Central had a similar alerter, in the form of two small bells which would ring on the approach of a train.  The interlocker at Lapeer was an improved Saxby and Farmer machine with a 12-lever frame,8 active levers and 4 spares.  From Charlie Whipp.

On March 26, 1976, the Penn Central ceased operation of their Bay City branch (that portion from Utica to Millington, south of Vasser).  After the branch was closed, the diamonds stayed in for about a year to serve a lumber company north of the Grand Trunk Western main line.  After the diamonds were moved, the tower stayed in service for another two years, until April 23, 1979, and was used by the GTW as a train order office.  Crossing protection for a local street corssing was also provided by the tower operator, which prolonged the life of the tower.  On April 23, 1979 at 15:00 hours the tower was closed by F. Stilley, the last operator on duty.  Contribution by Charlie Whipp.

Lapeer Jct. was located at the junction of the GTW Toronto to Chicago main line (Flint Sub. ) and the Bay City Branch of the Michigan Central RR. ( Detroit Div ).  The town contained 4,500 people in the 1950's.  The tower's telegraph call sign was "G".

The interlocking was installed in 1900 when the Grand Trunk was double tracked across Michigan and was staffed by GTW operators, although expenses were 55% MC 45% GTW. The north crossing diamond was owned by the Michigan Central and the south crossing diamond was owned by the Grand Trunk Western.

Traffic was heavy at this interlocking.  For a sample of a days worth of trains, the list below is taken from the "on sheet" register from the Lapeer Jct. Tower on June 11, 1955:
