Lakeland, MI

When the Toledo, Ann Arbor and Northern Railroad went north from Ann Arbor, it needed to cross the Michigan Air Line Railroad near Hamburg.  Rather than cross the MAL at first, the TAA&N joined the MAL at a Junction and used the MAL main line between the two lakes (Island Lake and Zukey Lake).

Before too long, the TAA&N decided to no longer use the MAL and filed plans with the Michigan Railroad Commission to cross the MAL east of Schuler's Ice House.  This crossing ultimately became known as "Lakeland".  The crossing at Lakeland was originally a tower, and then was reduced to an automatic interlocking.  The map above has been created from drawings located at the State of Michigan Archieves.
