Manistee was founded in 1832 by the landing of a party of men from Massachusetts.  The Stronach family arrived in 1840 and the town was established in the years thereafter.  Manistee was an important lumber town, operating 12-14 saw mills during its peak.  After logging slowed down around the turn of the century, and town economy focused on brine mining and salt production.

Railroads entered Manistee around 1881.  Around the turn of the century, there were four railroads centered in Manistee.  The Manistee & North Eastern connected the town with the north and east, and the Flint & Pere Marquette, Manistee & Luther, and Manistee & Grand Rapids went south and east.
