From Jeremy Reese, KC8PDU via OreRail list... Little Lake had a spring switch on the north end of the C&NW siding. Basically what it did was allow a train to take the siding, have a meet, then run out the siding without having to throw the switch. Where you run into problems is when you stop without the whole train on the main, and cars roll back. You could have the front trucks on the main, rear on the siding, and when they roll back you could have a car on the ground. From what I gather, the signal would rotate when the train was leaving the siding. Don't quite understand why, but that was what I was told by an old Northwestern Conductor.
