The Detroit & Mackinac
depot and freight house at Onaway. [Dale Berry Collection]
Below, a postcard view of the American Wood Rim Company in Onaway.
This large plant used hardwoods from the area to make steering
wheels and tire rims for the early auto industry. It put
Onaway on the map as "The Town That Steers the World". The
plant burned down and Onaway lost about half it's population.
The plant was served by the D&M, as well as a short line railway
which went into the woods, known as the "Dummy Line". |
