Fifth Street Tower, at the west end of Saginaw Yard (just east of the Potter Street Station). May, 1976.  [Charles Geletzke Jr.]

Former C&O Dispatcher Doug Hefty comments:  "This appears to be what was known as "5th St Tower." Before the underpass was put it, there were at least 3 roads crossings that crossed all the leads at the west end of the Saginaw yard. The crossing protection was operated manually from this tower. Also, there were some power switches associated with these leads that at one time were handled from this tower. When I worked at Washington Ave. Tower in the late 70's, this [interlocking] board had been moved to Washington Avenue Tower and was controlled from there. I think until the underpass was completed, people from the track department (not Operators) manned this tower to handle the crossing flashers. I can't be real specific on dates, but eventually all the lead switches were converted to hand throw."
