Tunnel Yard trackage was added to the south (east) end of the Chesepeake & Ohio Railroad Rougemere Yard in 1956 for the purpose of classifying freight cars headed for Canada. Prior to 1955, freight cars were floated across the Detroit River to Windsor. In 1955, the C&O received permission to use the New York Central's Detroit River tunnel and the car float operation was curtailed. Now, trains were organized at tunnel yard and they used the NYC from Delray to West Detroit and then east through the tunnel. The Tunnel Yard office was constructed in the summer of 1956 and new icing facilities and engine facilities were also built at Rougemere. The U.S. Customs service was also based in the building. Today, in 2002, the Tunnel Yard office is used by CP Rail for changing crews and occasionally engines. Reference: C&O History Magazine, March 2002. C&O Historical Society. |
