Note:  This line was the original Alpena & Northern Main Line, which was merged into the D&M.  As of 1898 this line was called the Detroit & Mackinac's A&N division.  In 1898, the D&M main line was extended northwest from La Roque (later called Hawks) through Onaway and to Cheboygan.  The Valentine Lake Branch from Hurst to Valentine Lake was abandoned in 1903 and the remainder from Hawks to Hurst was removed in 1923.

In the May 15, 1898 this line ran a round trip, second class Accommodation Train from Alpena to Valentine Lake, where it turned around and returned to Alpena.  Train #41 left Alpena at 7:20 am, 9:25 am at La Rocque, 9:40 am at Hurst, arriving at Valentine Lake at 11:05 am.  Train #42 returned, leaving Valentine Lake at 12:15 pm, 1:40 pm at Hurst, 2:05 pm leaving La Rocque, arriving at Alpena at 4:10 pm.
