The
Detroit & Mackinac Railway was in its infant stages, when it issued
Employee Time Table No. 37, on Sunday, May 15, 1898. The
railroad connection between Emery Junction (National City) and Bay
City had been completed, but the main line north of Alpena was still
referred to as the A&N (Alpena and Northern Railroad) division, and
went directly from Alpena to Valentine Lake (in Montmorency County,
near Atlanta).
Join us in examining this very interesting time table in the D&M's
formative years. The time table also included the railroad's
operating rules - rules that were later incorporated into a separate
rule book.

Interesting features of the time table...
-
Two first class, passenger trains operated between Bay City and
Alpena, each way, each day except on Sunday.
-
Mixed trains operated between Tawas City and Rose City and
Prescott once per day, except Sunday.
-
Employees were required to devote themselves exclusively to
the Company's service.
-
Trainmen were required to use caution within station limits where
cattle guards were in place.
-
A
telegraph was used for the operation of trains.
-
"Engineers, firemen and head brakemen should look back frequently
to see that all is right; and in case the train is broken apart,
great care must be taken to keep the forward part out of the way
of the detached part, and every precaution used to prevent a
collision. Engines will, in all cases, go back after the
detached portion has stopped."
-
Second-class interlockings were in service at the following
locations:
-
AuSable & Northwestern RR 1/4 mile south
of AuSable.
-
Saginaw Bay & Northwestern Division of the
Michigan Central RR, 40 rods north of Pinconning
-
C. S. & M. RR one mile north of Saginaw
River bridge.
-
Alpena's depot was downtown (later moved to Tawas Avenue)
-
The Rose City Division will be operated by Telephone from East
Tawas, and the Alpena & Northern Division by Telephone from Alpena
Junction. All rules and forms of orders will be strictly
adhered to where trains are despatched by telephone,s ame as if
despatched by telegraph.
