Station: Siemans, MI

Siemans was a station on the Chicago & Northwestern railroad between Bessemer and Ironwood. It was founded around 1894 and had a saw mill.

On the Soo Line (WC), Siemans had a 31 car passing siding in 1961 and the C&NW had an ore sorting yard here as well as an interchange to the Soo Line.

The C&NW has a wye here, as well as branches to serve the Puritan, Geneva, and Newport mines.

Notes

Siemans is likely named after nearby Siemens Creek (sic). [GMAP]

Time Line

1905. The busy season for the railroad boys in the yards has now arrived, and the "whir" of the switch engine makes music pleasant to the ears of everyone who has been waiting through a long, dull winter season for this welcome sound. [BHN-1905-0422]

1918. The C&NW had telegraph operators here around the clock. [TRT]

1937. W.S. Peters has been awarded a contract from the Soo Line and Northwestern railroads to construct two "cut-overs" (crossovers) between the systems at Siemens. The switches will be used to transfer ore trains from one line to the other and to materially aid in the dispatch of ore. About 2,000 feet of storage track ground will also be graded.
