  • Panic of 1857 continues. [MRRC]

  • July 2: The Detroit and Milwaukee reaches Grand Rapids from Ionia [AAD]

  • July 4: First regularly scheduled passenger train into Grand Rapids (road not identified, probably the D&M). [MDOT]

  • August 26: The Detroit and  Milwaukee railroad bridge over the Grand River in Grand Rapids is completed. [AAD]

  • September 1: The Detroit & Milwaukee completes its line from Owosso to Mill Point. [MCR-75]

  • November 22: Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad completed its line between Grand Rapids and Grand Haven, allowing for through passage between Detroit and Grand Haven via Owosso, Ionia and Grand Rapids.  The railroad terminated on the west side of the river where a massive depot was built.  The depot was also used as a hotel.  A ferry was used to take people to the east sideof the river where Grand Haven was actually located.  [MDOT/MRRC/AAD/MCR-75]


  • The Amboy, Lansing & Traverse Bay Railroad opens their line from Owosso to Laingsburgh. [MCR-75]

  • The first Pullman sleeper goes into service. [SAM]
