Notes

This open pit mine was in the Michigamme area in NW-SW Sec 22 of T48N-FR31W

Opened in 1882 as an underground mine. Once part of the Northrup property which included also the Norwood. Formerly operated by the Munro Iron Mining Co., Rogers Brown Iron Co as agent. Worked by the room and piller system. After 1950, developed by the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company as part of the Ohio mine low-grade ore project. Ore to be concentrated in the Ohio heavy media plant.

Shipped 354,654 tons between 1882 and 1905.  By was of the DSS&A to Marquette and the C&NW to Escanaba


Time Line

1900. Beaufort mine, three miles west of Michigamme, operated by the Brtistol Iron Company and employing 40 to 50 hands, will be closed down for the winter. It was reopened three months ago after 12 years of idleness. [DFP-1900-1026]
