Notes

Opened in 1882. Formerly an Oliver Iron Mining Co. operation for the Illinois Steel Co. From 1926 through 1931 the NW-SW Sec. 20 was operated by Oglebay, Norton & Co. for the Bristol Mining Co. under agreement with the Oliver Iron Mining Co. as a part of the Bristol-Youngstown Mine. Leased by Inland Steel Co. in 1949 and reopened together with the Bristol as Bristol-Youngstown with shipment in 1950.

Time Line

1883. The Youngstown Mine at Crystal Falls will resume operations June 1. Several thousand tone of ore are in stock. [DFP-1883-0522]

1887. March 19. The first train of the season went to the Youngstown mine. It contained the new air compress (sic), drills, and other machinery for the mine. [DD-1887-0319]

1887. March. An engine and two five-foot Lane friction band hoisting drums were received at the Youngstown mine on Wednesday and will be put in position at once. This machinery was furnished by the M.C. Budlock Manufacturing Co. of Chicago. [DD-1887-0326]

1887. Twenty-five wood choppers wanted at once at the Youngstown mine. [DD-1887-0312]

1887. The Youngstown mine is the largest ore body in the Crystal Falls district, Menominee Range, and is operated by the Youngstown Iron Mining Co. under a lease from D. Nelson of Port Washington, Ohio, owner of the fee, for which parties are negotiating and on which an option is held at a most reasonable sum. The Youngstown management will send forward 60,000 tons of ore the present season. The royalty is 25 cents a ton and the minimum quantity to be paid for each year is 20,000 tons. There are good prospects of the fee simple changing hands. [DD-18887-0326]

1889. August 12. The Youngstown mine is sold to Frederick Schlesinger of Milwaukee, representing a syndicate of New York capitalists already interested in the region. [DFP-1889-0813]

1890. April. A five car train was sent out from the Youngstown mine Thursday morning. [DD-1890-0412]

1890. This mine is owned by the Schlesinger Syndicate of Milwaukee. [DD-1890-0823]

1891. February. The mine, a member of the Schlesinger group has been shut down. [IWT-1891-0207]

1927. The Bristol Mining Co. (Oglebay Norton & Co.) has installed a 20inch gyratory crusher in the Bristol head-frame to replace the old crusher. The Bristol mine is situated at Crystal Falls. Development of the Youngstown mine adjoining the Bristol is underway for the U.S. Steel corporation. About 160 men are employed at the Bristol Mining Co. at this time. The mine has run over a period of a year without a lost-time accident and is still increasing the length of that period. [MCH-1927-0902]
