Time Line

1882. Test mining. [DD-1902-1206]

1890. The machinery at the May mine is in operation after an idleness of several months. A side track is all that is necessary to connect the property with the main railroad. [GOA-1890-1108]

1899. October. The May is situated in the south eastern part of third ward of Crystal Falls, and may properly be classed among the semi-developed properties in this locality. Two shafts, 100 feet apart, have been sunk in the ore body to a depth of 100 feet each. A drift connects the two shafts at the bottom. It is said that the ore deposit averages about 20 feet in width and has indications of making a large deposit. The main line of the C&NW runs within twenty feet of the shaft which is another good feature. The acquisition of this property by Oglebay Norton & Co. makes them a large holder in the iron mines of this district. They have now the Alpha, Bristol, Hollister and May mines, besides a few smaller prospects. [DD-18l99-1028]
