1890. April. An article from Ashland, WI says two men were killed and five injured, one probably fatally, by the falling of a rock in the shaft in the Great Eastern Mine. The victims were Capt. William Hooper, one of the oldest superintendents on the Upper Peninsula and James Martin, a miner. [DFP-1890-0423] 

1891. July. The Great Eastern mine, formerly the Night Hawk, on the NW quarter of the NW quarter of Section 18, T42N-R32W, near Mastodon mine has a small force of men engaged in putting down a shaft, which is now about 30 feet deep, 27 of which is in the ore; a drift was driven a distance of fifteen feet in ore. The ore is very hard and runs as high as 62% in metallic iron. [DD-1891-0711]
