Caledonia Mine was located in Mansfield, east of Crystal Falls in Iron County.


Time Line

1887. In sinking a shaft at the Caledonia mine on the Michigamme river, east of Crystal Falls, an eight foot vein of silver-bearing quarts has been encountered. Samples are not being examined. [DD-1887-0409]

1889. December 11. The Caledonian mine, at Crystal Falls, was drowned on Monday. The mners ran a shaft under the river and when a blast was exploded the river burst through and filled the mine. The men barely escaped with their lives. The loss of property destroyed will be great. [PHTH
