Time Line

1889. Ground sinking. The ground over the South Buffalo mine began to sink, the movement extending until th Queen mine was also affected. Several acres of ground have sunk from 10 to 100 feet, and the movement still continues. Small mine buildings, railroad tracks and trees were engulfed. All the miners have quit work underground and are ow employed on the surface removing material over the dangerous ground. The extent of damage can not be estimated till the caving stops and nothing can now be done to prevent the continuance of it. The loss will be very heavy. [News-Palladium 1898-1022]

1890. This mine is owned by the Schlesinger Syndicate. [DD-1890-0823]
