Produced: Iron Ore, soft, red, no-Bessemer, high phosphorus and siliceous.

Method: Underground and open pit.

Railroad connection: Initially M&O. Then LS&I to Presque Isle dock; DSS&A to Marquette dock.

Until: 1935

Lifetime Production: 189,225 tons from 1871 to 1878. 2,997,802 tons between 1871-1935.


Notes

South of the Negaunee Mine. Soft hematite. Very little manganese.

Originally operated by Marquette & Pacific Rolling Mill Col, and later by Jones and Laughlin Ore Co., a subsidiary of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. After 1919 operated by Rolling Mill Mining Co. (Clement Quinn & Co. agent).


Time Line

1907. Exceptionally good progress has been made with the development and mining work at the Rolling Mill property southeast of Negaunee where a new mine is being opened by the Jones & Laughlin company. Four drifts are being opened from the bottom of the shaft, which is 643 feet in depth. [DFP-1907-0224]

1907. December 7. At the Rolling Mill Mine, Negaunee, Marquette Co., a skip falls resulting in 10 fatalities

1919. Includes the Kruse open pit which opened in 1919. 

1945. Purchased by Jones and Laughlin Ore Co.in December, 1945.
