1879. January. A passenger train traveler notes "small locomotives looking as they were just out of the shop, puffing away on Tom Nester's "Pinconning & Lake Shore Log Road", looking ridiculously small in comparison with the JL&S "huge monster". This road is about 15 miles long, extending up into Mr. Nester's large pineries, a great portion of which lie in Roscommon County. At Pinconning a mill is in successful operation, while all the people seem to be active and energetic. [DFP-1879-0104]
