Time Line

1883. November. The train on the Peters' Logging Railroad was wrecked this morning by a tree falling across the truck a few rods ahead of the engine. From this cause the locomotive was thrown into the ditch, breaking the truck and smoke-stack. Three of the loaded cars were somewhat damaged. The train was coming down a steep hill at the rate of 40 miles an hours. The engineer, John Goff, was thrown 22 feet into the air, sustaining injuries to his back, while the fireman George Wikinson had his ankle badly sprained. [DFP-1883-1106]
