Station: Gibbs City, MI

Gibbs City was a sawmill settlement on the Paint River in western Iron County. The town was 10 miles northwest of Iron River. It was settled in the late 1880's but most residents were gone by 1952. It was located at the end of a seven mile long C&NW branch line from Hazel. [MPN]

Atkinson had a post office, St. Henry's Catholic Church and District School No. 4 at Atkinson. They also had several saw mills, lath mill, iron refuse burner 90' in diameter and a boiler house with six boilers along the Paint River.


Time Line

1903-1900. Metropolitan Lumber Co. They had a large saw mill, shingle mill, planing mill and a six ladder track double ended yard here. [SBN-1893, 1900]

1921. The town had a sawmill, which burned down in 1921.

1952. The post office continued until 1952.

1966. The remaining buildings were burned in a controlled fire.

1970. The C&NW Gibbs City branch was abandoned and pulled up. [MRL-Wiki]
