Location: Fortune Lake, MI

Fortune Lake was located on the highway (later US-2) between Crystal Falls and Iron River, MI in Iron County. It was between the north end of Fortune Lake and the south end of May Lake. The town was served by the Iron River branch of the Milwaukee Road railroad.

Time Line

1896. May 23. The Fortune Lake bridge gave way Thursday noon while a portable steam boiler in transit from the Mastodon mine to the Dober mine in Iron River was being hauled across it. The south span went down letting the back end of the boiler into the water, a few feet below. The rest of the bridge remained intact and no injury resulted to either teams or driver. The horses were the property of Any Boyington of Iron River and were drven by Jack Harrington. The bridge is a wood structure and is a part of the county road system. It has been temporarilty repaired and is now again passabe, but it is understood that it will be given a complete overhauling at once. [DD=1896-0523]
