Palmer was settled about 1873 as a station on the Chicago & Northwestern's Loop Line. The Volunteer Mine was located here. It was leased by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company in 1899. [MPN]
Today, Palmer is home to the nearby Empire Mine and the Tilden Mine, the two working iron ore mines in the Marquette range.
The C&NW had a small engine house and turntable here, just east of the highway crossing. They were removed in October, 1917. They also had a water tank and pump house here. These were removed in 1925. [CNWV]
