Location: Palmer, MI - Empire Mine Pellet Plant

The Empire Mine Pellet Plant was located in Palmer, in Marquette County. The plant worked in conjunction with the adjacent Empire open pit mine.


Notes

First plant of its kind to treat magnetite ore in Michigan. Output was 63-64% iron. Partners receive ore in percentage of their ownership. CCI sells their share on the market.


Time Line

1963. Plant construction is complete. [IOI]

1970. Ownership of this plant is Inland Steel Co. (40%), McLouth Steel Corp. (25%), International Harvester Co. (15%) and Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. (20%). The operator was CCI. [IOI]
