Montmorency County, Michigan was created in 1840 by the Michigan Legislature. It was originally named Cheonoquet County, which means "Big Cloud". The name was changed to Montmorency in 1843 after Count Montmorenci, who helped the 13 Colonies in the Revolutionary War. The county was officially established in 1881 after it split from Alpena County.

The county is located in the north-central part of Michigan. For most of the 19th century, the land was a dense forest with white pine, jack pine, and some hardwoods. The logging boom began in 1881. [GGAI]
