A steam sawmill was established at Zilwaukee about 1848. Zilwaukee was located on the west side of the Saginaw River across from Crow Island, and was served by the Michigan Central and Grand Trunk Western railroads. [MPN]

1886. Fire destroyed the mill, three drill houses, and 5,000,000 feet of lumber belonging to Bliss Brothers. The loss will considerably exceed $100,000. [AR-1886-0917]
1889. November. The people of Zilwaukee are in hopes that when the TS&M railroad goes into operation the village will have a regular depot, which it has not had since the MC depot was burned about three years ago. [SAG-1889-1102]
1891. August. A small station on the CS&M railroad at Zilwaukee was burned Saturday morning by an incendiary fire. I is said that the people in the town were mad because they had not been given as good a depot as was promised and turned it, preferring none to the measly structure they had. [NDU-1891-0805]
