Station: Mayville, MI

Mayville was settled about 1860 in southern Tuscola County. In 1887, a station stop was established here on the Port Huron & Northwestern (later PM/C&O). The town became an incorporated village in 1887. [MPN] Mayville was about 12 miles east of Vassar near the Lapeer County border.

Time Line

1903. May 4. As a result of a head-on collision between two Pere Marquette passenger trains at Mayville, 31 miles east of Saginaw, two men are dead and seven severely injured, one of those probably fatally. The collision took place on a curve about a half mile east of the Mayville station, and but for the prompt action of Engineer Kelly in setting the air brakes of the westbound train, the two would probably have telescoped and the calamity had been much greater. A mistake in orders is said to be the cause. [DFP-1903-0505]
