Industry: Detroit Stove Works, Hamtramck, MI

The Detroit Stove Works was a major producer of stoves in Detroit. During the Victorian era, stoves replaced fireplaces in homes and businesses.

In 1868, the company offices were located at 15 and 17 W. Woodbridge Street, at Griswold in Detroit. The foundry was on Mt. Elliott Avenue in Hamtramck near the U.S. Marine Hospital. [DHS]

Other large stove companies in the Detroit area were Michigan Stove Company and Peninsular Stove Company.


Time Line

1864. The Detroit Stove Works was incorporated, and began producing the "Jewel" stove.

1923. The company purchases the Art Stove Company. The company's stoves were manufactured under the "Garland", "Laurel", "Jewel" and "Detroit Jewel" brand names. [DHS]

1925. The Detroit Stove Works merged with Michigan Stove to become the Detroit-Michigan Stove Company. [DHS]

1957. The factory was closed. [DHS]

1998. The "Big Stove", a feature at the Stove Works was restored and returned to the State Fair grounds but was destroyed by fire in 2011. [DHS]
